JROTC Monroe Aids Post

Van Sullivan, Commander John C. M. Vann Post 5464, is now working closely with a local Monroe, NC, JROTC Commander that supports two local high schools.  The JROTC Commander was  seeking  involvement with the Monroe VFW and wanted to know how his JROTC unit could help.  It was perfect timing.

Commander Sullivan reports, “As I was planning our Memorial Day Service at the time, this appeared a God send of which it certainly turned out to be!  Several cadets showed up on Saturday AM prior and worked hand in hand with our members to strip and wax floors and police the grounds in preparation for Monday’s service including a parent whom stated; ” I just wanted to share some quality father and son time with my son!”

They further showed up in force (approx. 20 – 25 ) early on Memorial Day to practice and prepare for the service. As their dedication and professionalism emanated from their actions and appearance, I turned the opening presentation of colors and pledge of allegiance over to them. The final segment of our service included a flag retirement ceremony of which I turned over to them as well, being they have studied, practiced, and performed it many times. The service was heralded by many as being the best and most moving in years. These young Americans, our future, made this possible in every sense as well as the pride they displayed along with their parents attendance. Several parents inquired about membership as well.”

Commander Sullivan has since been contacted by a third area high school JROTC Unit!  He welcomed their initiative and will use their unit for an event on June 4th.

We congratulate Post Commander Sullivan and his post for their work with the JROTC.  If your post has a JROTC Unit or Boy Scout troop in your area, reach out to them and maybe you, too, will be able to report on new activities at your post that were made possible by the youth in your community.
